South Riverdale CHC is offering the Motivational Interviewing (MI) : Strategies to Work Through Client Ambivalence session delivered by Tammy Purdue (MSW, RSW)The webinar will review the concept of ambivalence and identify various MI skills to elicit the client’s thoughts about change. We will review some key strategies clinicians can use to process ambivalence with clients and how to evoke client motivation. Strategies on how to raise discrepancy and evoke concern will also be also addressed. Opportunities for skills practice will occur throughout the webinar.

The tools and techniques taught in the workshop:
  • helps foster a collaborative relationship between clients and their health care provider
  • are applicable to any chronic health condition
  • can be used in various clinical settings
  • are compatible with other self-management techniques
  • reinforces language taught in the peer led Stanford program

MI makes efficient use of health care providers’ time and can be used as part of any routine client interaction with the opportunity to use it over multiple visits.

Session Topics:

Session 1: Engaging Process

This session will focus on strategic use of OARS skills; the underlying philosophy of CAPE (Compassion, Acceptance, Partnership and Evocative Spirit); identifying communication barriers and the “righting reflex” which impacts on the therapeutic relationship.

Session 2: Focusing Process & Evoking Change Talk

The session will address skills healthcare providers can use to create a collaborative agenda with the client to determine a focus for the session.  We will review core skills used in the Evoking Process related to concepts of change talk and sustain talk and learn strategic evoking skills that help explore client ambivalence about making a change.

Session 3: Evoking Process & Strategically Responding

This session will address how to intentionally respond to any change talk we hear from the client to continue momentum in the conversation and maintain the client’s focus on making a change. We will review strategies that can be used to elicit client commitment to a goal or plan.

Session 4:  Evoking Commitment to Change & Planning Process

This session will focus on identifying and evoking specific client commitment language that indicates readiness for change and how healthcare providers can intentionally direct the conversation to help the client develop a goal or an action plan. Strategies for assessing the client’s level of importance and confidence in goal attainment as well as overcoming barriers will be explored.
