South Riverdale CHC is offering the Motivational Interviewing (MI) : Strategies to Work Through Client Ambivalence session delivered by Tammy Purdue (MSW, RSW)The webinar will review the concept of ambivalence and identify various MI skills to elicit the client’s thoughts about change. We will review some key strategies clinicians can use to process ambivalence with clients and how to evoke client motivation. Strategies on how to raise discrepancy and evoke concern will also be also addressed. Opportunities for skills practice will occur throughout the webinar.

Session Topics:
Session 1:Engaging and Focusing Process
This session will focus on strategic use of OARS skills; the underlying philosophy of CAPE (Compassion, Acceptance, Partnership and Evocative Spirit); identifying communication barriers and the “righting reflex” which impacts the development of a therapeutic relationship. Strategies to engage the client in developing a collaborative focus for the session will also be discussed
Session 2: Identifying, Eliciting and Responding to Change Talk
This session will address identifying and listening for client change talk. We will discuss and practice strategies to elicit/evoke change talk within the client as well as how to effectively respond to change talk so the client talks more about making change and determines that something needs to be different.
Session 3: Exploring Ambivalence, Raising Discrepancy and Addressing Relationship Discord
This session will focus on strategies that can be used to explore client ambivalence about change and how to raise concerns with the client about their current behaviour. Skills on how to maintain therapeutic rapport using advanced reflective listening skills to counter/challenge the client’s thoughts about change will be explored.
Session 4: Commitment to Change, Obtaining a Goal and Developing Action Plans
This session will address specific client commitment language that indicates readiness for change and how HCPs can seamlessly move into the planning process to develop client centred goals and action plans. Strategies for assessing the client’s level of importance and confidence in goal attainment as well as overcoming barriers to change will be explored.
