What is Health Literacy?

The Health Literacy training introduces participants to concepts that support and emphasize the importance of communicating clearly so that patients and caregivers can truly participate in care.

In this training, participants will learn plain language and design, chunk and check, teach-back, and other motivational interviewing based skills.

This training is for front line service providers at all levels as well as administrative and communication staff in an organization.

 

How do we offer the training?

Health Literacy is facilitated in 2 sessions ( 3 hours per session) using Zoom.

Dates:

December 07 and 14, 2:00pm-5:00pm.

What is the cost for this training?

No payment is required for this professional development training.

Who leads the training?

The Health Literacy training will be led by trained facilitators who were screened and certified at a comprehensive training offered by the Centre for Collaboration, Communication, Motivation, and Innovation (CCMI). These individuals are practicing healthcare providers working in institutions across Toronto. They are part of an active community of practice that meets regularly and have been instrumental in the roll out of this program by SRCHC.

 

Who developed the training?

CCMI developed this evidence-informed program and continue to update it periodically.

 

What you will need to do?

Registered participants must participate  sessions. Also, following registration, they must submit a sample of a flyer or a communication tool that they use in their work with their clients as per instructions received from the Choose health team.

  • Come to the session as registered
  • Take care of your needs (stand up, stretch, leave the room)
  • Make S.M.A.R.T goals based on the content delivered
  • Be respectful of others and their ideas
  • Maintain confidentiality
  • Turn off your cell phones/pagers
  • Participate in group discussion
