What is PEP Talk: Healthy Feet, Diabetes, and You?
PEP Talk Diabetes Health Feet & You is a self-management education workshop program designed to prevent diabetic foot ulcers and amputations. This workshop teaches skills needed for daily foot care. Specifically, the one-time 1.5 hour workshop reviews diabetes effect on feet, identifying factors that lead to diabetic foot ulcers, and teaching appropriate foot care techniques to prevent foot ulcers.

Who can attend?
Adults experiencing type 2 diabetes as well as their family, friends and/or caregivers.

What does it cost to attend?
It is FREE to participants, and participants receive a workbook. Participants must pre-register for a workshop.

What happens in the workshop?
Workshop groups meet once over 2.5 hours. There are ten to fifteen participants in each workshop. In the workshop, you will learn how to:
• Identifying factors that lead to diabetic foot ulcers
• Assessing the impact of diabetes on the health of your feet
• Appropriate foot exam and care techniques to prevent diabetic foot ulcers
• Introduction to your diabetic foot healthcare team and understanding the different roles of the healthcare providers
• Diabetic foot screening
• Commitment to change

Participants take an active role in the workshop by setting S.M.A.R.T goal(s) and providing feedback on the topics covered as well as knowledge gained.

Who leads the workshop?
It is facilitated by two individuals who are trained by healthcare professionals. As this is a peer-led model, the individual who delivers the workshop has some experience with neuropathy, foot ulcers and/or diabetic wounds.

Who developed the program?
The Canadian Association of Wound Care (CAWC) developed this evidence-based program with funding from the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC).

Guidelines for Participation in the one-time long program

In order to benefit from this workshop, we ask you to: 

  • Come to the session as registered
  • Take care of your needs (stand up, stretch, leave the room)
  • Be respectful of others and their ideas 
  • Maintain confidentiality 
  • Turn off your cell phones/pagers
  • Give new activities at least a two-week trial 
  • Participate in group discussion
