What is Motivational Interviewing?
The training is designed to build progressively across the four processes of a Motivational Interviewing (MI) intervention- engaging, focusing, evoking and planning. Each session will be three (3) hours in duration, followed by a one (1) hour practice and feedback session.
What happens in the training?
A group of 10–15 healthcare providers or service providers will participate in the virtual training over four consecutive weeks, meeting on the same day and time each week. The program aims to develop motivational interviewing skills that support rapport-building and effectively engage clients in conversations about healthy behavior change.
Participants learn skills that will help them:
- Strategically use of OARS skills; the underlying philosophy of CAPE (Compassion, Acceptance, Partnership and Evocative Spirit)
- Identify and listen for client change talk practice strategies to elicit/evoke change talk within the client as well as how to effectively respond to change talk
- Use strategies that can be used to explore client ambivalence about change and how to raise concerns with the client about their current behaviour
- Address client’s commitment to Change, obtaining a Goal and Developing Action Plans
How is this training delivered?
The Motivational Interviewing Sessions will be delivered using the Zoom Meeting platform.
Participants will require access to an electronic device (a computer, or tablet) with a web camera and microphone and internet connection to join the training.
Who can attend this training?
Healthcare Providers and Service Providers whom provide healthy behaviour change support to clients living in the Ontario Health – Toronto Region.
Who leads the training?
Motivational Training is led by two trained facilitators trained by the Centre for Collaboration, Communication, Motivation, and Innovation (CCMI). They are part of an active community of practice that meets regularly.
